A Simple Spiritual Tool That Changes Everything

Each one of us holds a light in the center of our being that is connected to all other hearts. It has the power to lift and to transform.

I think that's why this simple thought resonated with so many of you this month:"When someone crosses your mind, bless them."

Because we recognize our oneness on a spiritual level and we resonate with the thought that our love can lift another.

And hey, it's quiet. It's easy. It's gentle. Yet it changes things.

Blessings are a powerful, transformative gift that we can offer to others—anytime, anywhere.

My friend, Maria, after reading the Every Day Spirit pages about blessing others, made this part of her spiritual practice. While walking to the store, preparing to teach yoga class or gardening - she is constantly showering people and events with the quiet hum of Bless you.

And you know how I try to answer most of the comments on the daily Facebook posts? Each morning as I write back to you, in my heart I am showering you with light; blessing you and all of your intentions for the day. As my fingers tap the keys, my heart says, Bless you.

When given generously from a heart of love, this humble act shines the light of comfort on the receiver.

In his inspiring book, The Gentle Art of Blessing, Pierre Pradervand tells us that, “To bless means to wish, unconditionally and from the deepest chamber of your heart, unrestricted good for others and events.”

To bless is to uplift. Whenever anyone crosses our path or our mind, we can get in the habit of offering them a quick blessing.

It takes only a little mindfulness to recognize the countless opportunities we have in a day to lift up others in ways that are beyond the scope of our material world.

Pradervand puts it beautifully when he tells us, “To bless all without distinction is the ultimate form of giving, because those you bless will never know from whence came the sudden ray that burst through the clouds of their skies…”

Blessing others gives us a positive alternative to aggravation and complaint, helplessness and fear.

Yes, you can even bless the person who cuts you off, or acts rude, or says no to your request.

There is always something we can do to change the world for the better, and in the process, become an instrument of compassion and healing.

Shining within the heart of each one of us is a simple spiritual tool that changes everything: The two powerful words, Bless you.

So today, when someone crosses your mind, bless them.

In The World:

  • Use the art of blessing others as a spiritual practice throughout the day today. Try it in all circumstances, sending blessings to loved ones and strangers alike; in situations of ease and also in ones of challenge. Make it a practice. Start the habit. Lift our world with the light of your love.

In The Heart:

  • Throughout this day, I bless all who cross my path, generously and in connection with unlimited Divine source. Blessing others brings me joy.
